College of Charleston Lecture

File this under "Never did it before"
Had a great opportunity yesterday to speak with some College of Charleston students about Historic Preservation in Charleston.
Specifically, some of the students have "adopted" a building that we have many years of experience with as their class project.
They were so interested and intelligent and well spoken.  I was impressed and my hope renewed for the next generation.
Way to go CofC.

For Immediate Release

Strock Enterprises, Inc. has been selected by Remodeling magazine to join the Remodeling Big50. The Big50 awards will be  presented at a gala dinner at the Remodeling Leadership Conference in Arlington, VA on May 13, 2011. The 2011 Big50 winners are featured in the May issue of Remodeling, a national trade publication read by more than 80,000 professional remodeling contractors.
Each year since 1986, the Remodeling Big50 inducts 50 owners of remodeling companies that have set exceptionally high standards for professionalism and integrity through exemplary business practices, craftsmanship, and impact in their community or the industry at large. Big50 remodelers run successful, often growing, companies of various sizes that have taken the lead in raising industry standards.
The Big50 selection process has become increasingly rigorous in recent years, and the result, Remodeling editors believe, is one of the strongest classes to date. All 2011 inductees “stood up to detailed examinations of their businesses and their books, and they all demonstrated an admirably deft ability to restructure, retrench, and flat-out hustle to remain viable in a challenging economic climate,” according to Remodeling.
“We are very honored to receive this distinction,” says Brenda Strock, President of Strock Enterprises, Inc. “The award recognizes excellence and leadership, and we are privileged to be named to this select group of remodelers.”
Remodeling editors, columnists, industry leaders, and the companies themselves make the nominations each year.  Following a lengthy evaluation and interview process, the editors select the 50 individuals who exemplify the best of the industry that year, and who have something to offer other remodelers in proven practices. Winners are selected in these categories: business savvy, fine design, industry impact, market wise, movers & shakers, niches, sales & marketing, and teamwork. Strock Enterprises, Inc. was selected for the category of teamwork.
Remodeling, published by Hanley Wood, LLC, is the leading publication in the home improvement industry. Designed to address the specific concerns of residential remodeling pros, the magazine is both a business tool and an industry leader for a market that reached nearly $300 billion in 2010.

Summerville Kitchen Renovation

We recently had the great pleasure of working with clients in Summerville to update their kitchen.  The goal of the project was to keep the kitchen within the existing footprint, and gain storage space while making the kitchen feel more open, airy, and bright.

As you can see the kitchen was VERY Dark - Dark cabinetry, dark floors, inadequate work lighting, and a white tile backsplash and countertop.

In the mid 70's these cabinets were THE thing in Charleston.    Simpson Built cabinets - built to last. But very out of date by todays standards.

The lack of storage space had the homeowners using the countertops as additional storage.

The finished Renovation.  These cabinets are actually the 2010 version of the original cabinets - built by Mr. Simpsons Son - Cliff Simpson.  The same basic layout was kept - large corner storage cabinets were added into each corner, the cabinets were extended all the way to the ceiling creating a whole extra shelf of storage space.  New appliances were installed from Dacor.  The tile countertop and backsplash were replaced with granite.  The lighting in the kitchen was changed to all recessed lighting with undercabinet lighting throughout the entire kitchen.  Not visible in the photos is a workstation/island in the bay window that easily seats three and adds even more storage.  The floors were resanded and finished slightly lighter than before - brightening up the entire kitchen.

April Showers Bring May Flowers...

and Sometimes leaky roofs.  We had a pretty harsh winter here in the lowcountry - Below freezing quite a few nights.  When it freezes sometimes that can create cracks in your roofing membrane (depending on what type of roof you have)  Now is the time to be on the look out for leaks coming in.  If you do have leaks call and let us know.  There are some amazing new products out for leak repair.

We're currently wrapping up some really great projects - one being a pretty major Master Bathroom Renovation (we took a pretty boring run of the mill bathroom, and turned it into a very modern, clean, New York with a Charleston Twist Master Bathroom)  We are getting ready to start a kitchen renovation that is going to be NIGHT and DAY.  We're taking a very Dated 1980's Bachelors Kitchen and turning it into a Classic Modern Kitchen with some amazing Cabinetry, tile work, and a beautiful new Quartz countertop.  Pictures of those projects to come soon.

Here are some Before & After photos of a small Hall Bath we remodeled during a whole house restoration...

This is a very small hall bathroom Downtown Charleston.   The entire bathroom measures about 6 feet wide by 7 feet deep.  Before the renovation there was a very large and unsightly light and vent fan in the ceiling as well as a very cramped (18inch) vanity area for guests to get ready for the day.

You can tell just how small this bathroom is in this picture - we were literally IN the tub trying to get a picture of the space.

In this small bathroom there was a very large cabinet that took up a lot of space and caused not only the vanity area to feel cramped, but the tub as well.

How would you like a window this size in your shower?  If those shutters flew open you'd have to wave at the neighbors.  Also - in this application there was no way to keep water from rotting out this wooden window.

As you can see we closed in the window for privacy.  All of the tile work in this bathroom is marble available at Ann Sacks. We used a 3x4 subway tile for the field and a mosaic accent strip bordered with matching pencil tiles at the top and bottom.  We also used a marble chair rail to finish the field tile surrounding the shower and water closet area, and matching marble base throughout the bathroom.  The vessel bowl is cast out of white bronze, and is sitting on a custom open shelf vanity.  The wall mounted lavatory and shower valves are only available through Hansgrohe International.  The leather wrapped medicine cabinet is a Robern.  This bathroom was designed to feel like the inside of a jewel box.

How do you know when it's time to change your filter?

You know it's time to change the filter when the air conditioner is eating the filter.

Looking for Luxfer Prism Glass

This is an example of Luxfer Prism Glass.  I am looking for a few pieces of these glass tiles produced in the United States by the Luxfer Prism Company in the early 1900's.  The glass was produced clear.  The manufacturer added manganese to regular green glass to make it clear.  However, over time, the ultra-violet radiation from the sun turned the clear glass into shades of violet.  If you know of someone, especially in the mid-west, who is into architectural salvage, please pass their info on to me or have them call me.  Thank you, Trey Strock
